Looking for a South Pacific Island Beach Resort that is situated in an impossibly beautiful place, then look no further than the Hotel Paradis D’Ouvea which is situated on the island of Ouvea in the Loyalty Islands Group in New Caledonia.

To get a picture of what a Pacific Ocean paradise is like, just imagine a 30 mile long blue lagoon with only one hotel sitting on a white sand beach, and you have the beach virtually all to yourself.   The four star Paradis D’Ouvre is the only quality hotel in the Loyalty Islands, which are a group of four islands a short flight away from the Capital of New Caledonia to the north. It has 15 cottages type villas, and ten of them are on the beach, whilst four of the others which have two bedrooms are further back, with only one ‘family’ style cottage is on the beach.   The accommodation is spacious and perfectly adequately furnished, with large verandahs, but it is important to remember that Ouvea is a remote South West Pacific Island and so standards cannot be compared to say Europe.   

Ouvea is very much a place for a South Pacific Honeymoon or a romantic getaway, because there really is nothing to do here.   You will take long walks along absolutely deserted beaches, and of course go swimming in just about the most perfect blue-turquoise-azure sea you will ever see in your life. Then there is snorkelling, and reading all the books you never have time to read at home, or just having quality time with the person you most want to have quality time with, whilst pretending you are Robinson Cruso!!   October is probably a good time to go, being at the end of the cooler time, and outside the tropical cyclone period.   

Remoteness and beauty such as you will find on Ouvea does come at a price, and not just the cost of getting here which is expensive anyway. An apparent Pacific Ocean paradise is the ultimate romantic getaway, but you should be aware of some of the following challenges.   

The main difficulty anywhere in New Caledonia is in regards to food and drink, and the same holds true at Paradis D’Ouvea. There is no room service, the mini bar is barely adequate, and if you are hungry between meals, then it is very difficult to get snacks, or drink outside happy hour.   If you were able to get your hands on a member of staff at these times, then they would almost certainly oblige you, but that seems to be difficult.   


Whilst one of the joys of a remote Pacific Island like Ouvea is the remoteness of it, this also means there are no shops nearby to supplement your rations, but of course it is just this remoteness that appeals to some.   The restaurant at the Paradis D’Ouvea is good by Pacific beach resort standards, and the food is well prepared and presented, but there are only about four choices of main course on the dinner menu. As the recommendation would be that you visit The Paradis D’Ouvea as part of an overall tour of the area, then you might stay here for three or four nights, so the lack of choice on the menu won’t be a problem. You can eat at the Gazebo on the beach under the stars for a real romantic dinner.  

 There is a swimming pool, but with the incredible beach location of the hotel, you won’t be using it much. Be aware that there is a huge number of Japanese honeymooners here during the week and local French people at the weekends. In fact the first language of the website is Japanese.   

Having said all that, even with the slight drawbacks, if you are looking for an idyllic Pacific Island, Lagoon, endless white sand beach for your getaway, then the Paradis D’Ouvea will more than fit the bill.

2.  Its relatively cheap

Belize’s government recently has enacted a retiree incentive program that permits U.S., Canadian and United Kingdom citizens to establish official residency in Belize and to live there free of most Belize taxes. Under the new program retirees can’t work in Belize, but income from outside Belize isn’t taxed, and retirees can bring in household goods, a car, a boat and even an airplane without paying import duties.

The overall cost of living is generally lower than the United States.  The average Belizean makes less than 6000 USD a year. 

3.  Its relatively safe

Belize is a parliamentary democracy and a member of the British Commonwealth. The country has a tradition of democracy and free elections.  Belize has a constitution, which includes a bill of rights. 

Although no place in the world is completely safe the crime in Belize is relatively low in comparison to other Central American countries. 


4.  It’s a good long term investment

The country of Belize has no capital gains taxes and has a well established off-shore banking system similar to Cayman Islands and Switzerland.  Full property insurance is available and is underwritten by Lords of London.

5.  It’s easy to get to
Belize lies on the eastern coastline of Central America, bordered on the north by Mexico, on the west and south by Guatemala, and on the east by the Caribbean Sea. It is separated by sea from its neighbor to the southwest, Honduras.

The iron railings surrounding Hyde Park were removed during World War II when there was a big drive to collect iron, steel and aluminum to make war weapons. One of these landmarks is the Serpentine, a large artificial lake, which separates the Hyde Park from neighboring Kensington Gardens. It is a popular place for boating and swimming. Another famous landmark is et the south end of Hyde park known as Rotten Row, a famous bridle path. The road is almost four miles long and is used as a horse riding, cycling, rollerblading and jogging route. The term 'Rotten Row' is derived from the French ‘route du roi’ or King's road. Speaker’s Corner is place which was established to create a venue where people would be allowed to speak freely. Here, every Sunday people stand on a soap box and proclaim their views on political, religious or other items, sometimes interrupted and challenged by their audience. The Marble Arch is just outside Hyde Park, at the north-east corner. The design by John Nash was based on the Arch of Constantine in Rome. Another arch, the Wellington Arch, can be found on the south-east corner of the park, connecting Hyde Park with Green Park. Inside the arch are exhibitions and galleries open to visitors. Mount Abu - The Paradise In The Rajasthan Desert

Mount Abu is an oasis amongst the desert in the state of Rajasthan, India. Mt Abu is situated at the southern tip of the Aravali range and because of its foliage it has a cool climate. Mount Abu is considered a summer retreat but it also has a stunning array of attractions; the Delwara Marble Jain Temples, dating back 11th- 13th centuries, makes it a popular pilgrimage center.

Mount Abu has an extensive religious history, having been home to many sages and saint.

The main sites in Mount Abu are:
Gaumukh Temple: The temple gets its name from a natural spring which flows through a sculpted cow’s head. It is said that the yagna’ of sage Vashishtha was performed here. A beautiful marble image of Nandi (the celestial bull rescued by Aebuada) is situated nearby.

Delwara Jain Temple: these temples were built between the 11th and 13th century. They are beautifully carved temples built from marble and dedicated to the jain Tirthankaras. The oldest temple is the Vimal Vasahi temple. Build in 1031AD, by Vimal Shah-a merchant and representative of then Gujarat ruler, is dedicated to the first Tirthankara. A superb example of temple architecture, the central shrine has an image of Rishabhdev and large courtyard with 52 small shrines. Each houses a beautiful statue of thirthankaras with 48 elegantly carved pillars form the entrance to the courtyard. Another finely crafted temple is the Lun Vasahi Temple. It was built in 1231AD by brothers Vastupal and Tejpal who were Ministers of Raja Vir Dhawal, a ruler of Gujarat which belonged to the Porwal Jain Community. The fine craftsmanship of the Lun Vasahi Temple includes beautiful door casings, pillars architraves and sculptures on the porticos.

Adhar Devi Temple : The Adhar Devi Temple is a favoured spot for tourists. You have to walk up a flight of 360 stairs to reach the temple chiseled out of a huge rock.

Sunset Point: At the sunset point you can watch the sun setting and covering the surrounding hills with a beautiful golden glow. A spectacular site. Honeymoon Point: Also known as Andra Point, it offers an enchanting view of the verdant plains and valleys. The place looks most beautiful during the dusk hours.

Shri Raghunathji Temple: Dedicated to Shri Raghunathji, this temple was built in the 14th century AD. It is situated near the Nakki Lake and contains beautiful sculpted work of the deity. It was built by famous Hindu preacher Shri Ramanand.

Gardens and Parks: throughout the hilly paradise of Mount Abu there are many beautifully laid parks and gardens. The more notable gardens include Ashok Vatika, Gandhi park, Municipal Park, Shaitan Singh Park and the Terrace Garden.

Nakki Lake : situated in the center of the city is the perfect location for a romantic evening.

Monte Carlo is the where you go to see the pretty people. Well, maybe not pretty, but definitely wealthy. I was loafing in Nice for a few days and decided to join two travelers for a day trip to Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo is only a ten minute train ride from Nice, so it seemed like the perfect day trip.

Monte Carlo is the kind of place that makes you feel insignificant. The place screams yachts, money, plastic surgery, money, Ferrari and did I mention money? This is not a travel destination for the faint of budget.

Monte Carlo is mostly about beaches, being seen and a high end casino. We had already hit the beaches in Nice, weren’t important enough to “be seen” and had been denied admission to the casino, so it was off to the museums.

Museums in Monte Carlo are pretty run of the mill with one notable exception. Spend enough time in them and you’ll become convinced the Grimaldi royal family is solely responsible for human civilization. I’ve been known to embellish on occasion, but the museums are ridiculous.

As day turned to evening, it was time to find something to eat. There were plenty of restaurants, but we either couldn’t afford them or weren’t dressed appropriately with our shorts. Walking back to the train station, we stumbled upon paradise itself.

Growing up in San Diego, California, one becomes addicted to Mexican food. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of Mexican food restaurants in Europe. In fact, I hadn’t eaten a rolled taco for two months. That was about to change.

Turning the corner on one of many endless little streets in Monaco, we were stunned to see a line of people waiting outside a door. The sign over the door read “Juan’s” and paradise was before us. Turns out the restaurant was owned by a San Diego resident and served authentic Mexican food. Rolled tacos, chicken tortilla soup and Dos Equis beer.

Mexican food in Monaco was definitely my idea of paradise. Of course, it set me back $75, but I really didn’t care at that point.

Margaret Island is one of the unique elements of  Budapest. The island is located in the middle of the Danube River in central Budapest and is a little more than 1 mile long and 500 yards wide. With the exception of a hotel at the south end, the island is free of cars and buildings.

Historically, Margaret Island served as a private park for Hungarian royalty and you can see why. The island consists mostly of paths flanked by old growth trees, rose gardens and tailored lawn areas. Peacocks walk freely around the island and wild ducks nest throughout the island. At the south end of the island, you can visit hot thermal springs, walk on paths through peaceful ponds or relax in front of tiered water cascades. During part of the year, plays are undertaken at an outdoor theatre.

The island is named after Princess Margaret, the daughter of King Bela IV. If the beauty of the island is a reflection of the Princess, she must have been one impressive woman.

These days, the island is open to the public and serves as a recreation area. During the weekdays, workers in Budapest pour out of the city and onto the island for lunch breaks. Only in Budapest can you be in the middle of an active city, walk 200 feet across a bridge and be in a peaceful, forested area.

Traveling can be hectic and stressful. If you’re feeling this way in Budapest, a visit to Margaret Island should provide a cure.

Major League Baseball Players in Japan - Strangers in Paradise

The final match-up of the World Baseball Classic featured two teams from countries where baseball is a beloved sport - Cuba and Japan.  Both countries are noted for producing fine players, some of whom are enjoying stellar careers in America.  Presently, Ishiro and Matsui from Japan are two of the best and most consistent players in the majors. Making it in the big leagues in America is a big deal in Japan, a country that loves baseball and embraces its own professional teams.

American teachers first introduced the game to the island country in the 1870’s, and it firmly took root. By the turn of the century, it was a sport throughout the nation and in 1936 the first professional teams were established. The current professional structure was created in 1950, with teams playing in either the Pacific League or the Central League.

The exchange of players between the Japanese leagues and Major League baseball is not a one-way street. The first American to play baseball in post-World War II Japan was Wallace Kaname Yonamine, a Nisei Japanese American who had played NFL Football but never had a spot on a Major League Baseball club. Yonamine had a Hall of Fame career in Japan.

When major leaguers from America first started to compete in the Japanese League, they were often at the end of their careers. In 1962, right-handed pitcher Don Newcombe became the first MLB player to sign and play with a team in Japan. During his 10 years in the majors, Newcombe posted a 149-90 mark, with 1129 strikeouts and a 3.56 ERA. He is still the only player to win Rookie of the Year, MVP and the Cy Young.  Newcombe was the first of many Americans to go to the Far East to play what many consider "the" American sport.

In the past decade something has changed concerning the emigration of professional players from America to Japan. The men who go to the Japanese League are no longer at the end of their careers. They are now, more often than not, mid-career players who can’t seem to find an everyday role on a major league team. Often, these players decide to go to Japan because they will have a chance to contribute every day.

Some players find a home away from home in Japan, while others go and get some daily experience and come back to parlay that into a starting role in MLB. Still, others struggle in their foreign environs and come back looking to play in the big leagues, even if it’s as a utility player.

Alex Cabrera is an example of the first type of player, while Lou Merloni seemed as though he might fit the bill for the second category but didn’t quite get a break in Japan or make the cut when he came back to his homeland. Gabe Kapler illustrates a player in the final and least desirable of the three groups.

First baseman Alex Cabrera, who spent nine seasons in the minors with the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Arizona Diamondbacks, finally got his chance to play Major League Baseball in 2000. In 31 games he hit 5 homer runs, scored 10 runs, knocked in 14 RBI and accumulated a .262 BA. Then, in 2001, the Seibu Lions of the Japan Pacific League bought his contract from the Diamondbacks.  For Cabrera it was the perfect move at exactly the right time.

Cabrera immediately became a star in Japan. In his first season he hit .282 with 124 RBI and 49 HR. In 2002, his second season, he won the Pacific League’s MVP award and tied the single season homerun mark (55) set by the Babe Ruth of Japan, Sadaharu Oh. (Tuffy Rhodes, another former MLB player also tied the record in 2001.)

In 2004, Cabrera hit two homeruns in game three, including a grand slam, and a massive dinger in the seventh game of the Japan Series to help the Seibu Lions defeat the Chunichi Dragons 7-2, leading his team to their first championship since 1992.

Cabrera totes a .308 BA with 413 RBI and 147 HR in his first four years with the Lions. Life is great for the first baseman and he loves Japanese ball. Except for one thing. In an interview with ESPN.com he acknowledged his frustration at not being allowed to break the record set by Sadaharu Oh.

Cabrera noted, "All my teammates wanted me to break the record. A lot of the players on other teams wanted me to break it, too. The pitchers want to throw me strikes but the managers and coaches don't let them."

"They didn't want me to get the record," he acknowledged. "All records are for the Japanese. The last 20 at-bats of the season, I think I only saw one strike."

There are aspects of the game with which MLB players have difficulty. Cabrera said it very clearly, when he complained, "Here, if you hit a home run your first at-bat, they walk you the next three. In America, you get a chance to hit more home runs. They challenge you."

In the same article, former Japanese player and present Yankee Hideki Matsui observed, "In the past there has been more of that sort of unfairness," Matsui said, sympathizing with Cabrera. "But it has been decreasing in the last couple years and I just hope that in the future it will get better."

Although Cabrera has found a home with the Lions, he’s certainly willing to come back and play in America. In fact, he’s anxious to prove that he can hit big league curveballs - something scouts claim he can’t do - and pound 40-plus round trippers per season in the majors.

Lou Merloni and Gabe Kapler both did their time in Japan for the same reasons and with similar results. Merloni and Kapler were enticed by the chance to play every day, something that had eluded them when they were both with the Boston Red Sox.

In 2000, Merloni went to the Yokohama Bay Stars with the understanding that he would be the team’s regular third baseman. But the player he was supposed to replace decided to stay with the team, and so Merloni spent much of the season on the bench. Although he found it to be a frustrating season, he also thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.

The game is pretty much the same, except there’s a rule prohibiting tie games from going more than 3 extra innings, which means the game ends in a tie. First, there are the pre-game workouts and warm-ups, lasting hours. Then there’s all the cigarette smoke - Japanese players light up a lot. Also, there’s the fact that when the club is on the road everyone has to dress for the game at the hotel because there are no visiting locker rooms.

The media never tired of asking the third baseman if he’d like to marry a Japanese woman. When Merloni answered questions, he often felt his translator was editing his comments along with reporters’ queries.

Along with the possibility of being an everyday player, there’s the bump in salary a player who’s been in the states realizes. Usually they’re making six to 10 times what they made in MLB! That’s quite a payday. After Japan, Merloni came back to the Red Sox and played for them and the AAA team for the next three seasons before going to various other major league clubs. He seemed like he might have found a starting role with San Diego part way through the 2003 season, but after 65 games, they dealt him back to the BoSox.

Gabe Kapler was offered a similar opportunity in 2005, and like Merloni, he took it. With a contract valued at approximately $2 million, the utility outfielder was excited about getting to play every day and experience an entirely different culture. But after being a part of Boston’s first World Series winning team in 86 years, Japanese ball seemed to lack the spark of the game played in his homeland.

Missing were the overly expressive fans, the rich heritage, and the knock ‘em down rivalries. Kapler also didn’t perform up to expectations and found himself sitting on the bench by the second-half of the season.  When he got back to the states and was signed by Boston for the rest of the 2005 season, he was overjoyed as were many Red Sox fans, who always admired Kapler’s hustle, work ethic and intelligent play.

In a strange twist of fate, the outfielder, who was on first base when Tony Graffanino hit a homer, ruptured his Achilles tendon after rounding second. As Kapler lay in the base path unable to get up and in agonizing pain, it was clear that his 2005 season was over.

In 2006, he was no longer on a major league roster and neither was Merloni, who had played a utility role with Cleveland in 2004.   For both players, Japan never panned out, while Alex Cabrera has achieved more than most Japanese players. The irony for Cabrera is that despite his winning ways, the Japanese League will never accept him. That non-acceptance, which seems to affect every foreign player, is one thing that definitely separates baseball in Japan from baseball in America.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall many parts of Eastern Europe have become widely accessible to tourists for the first time. Riga retains much of its old charm, yet has become much more “tourist friendly”. Many visitors have arrived here as tourists but then decided to say – the expat community is growing and investing in the country’s future.

So what is it about Riga that seems to be enchanting foreigners? For one thing, it’s the atmosphere of the place. Riga has retained its architectural gems, making the city a wonderful place to stroll through. The art nouveau architecture that survives from the 19th century is a joy to behold – the sheer beauty of some parts of this city (and this country) never cease to amaze.

Latvians are renowned for their free spirits and enjoyment of life. Nowhere can this be seen more clearly than when spending a night in one of the city’s many bars, clubs and pubs. There’s a vibrancy to Riga that lives long in the memory. Though residents of Vilnius and Tallinn may disagree, many would feel that Riga is the real jewel of the Baltic.

You could be forgiven for thinking that visiting a country where the main city has beautiful architecture, a wonderful atmosphere and great nightlife might involve great expense. Just when I thought I experienced the best in New Jersey’s resort destinations at the Jersey Shore, a friend suggested I visit the Lakeland area in Morris County, in particular Lake Hopatcong. This is New Jersey’s largest lake and actually is located in two counties Morris and Sussex . The towns of Roxbury, Mount Arlington, Jefferson and Hopatcong border the lake. Each of these towns although distinct in ambience, has real estate properties in common. There are beautiful homes that are affordable where many of the employees of the resort areas reside. Also available are very upscale homes overlooking the lake. Many New Jersey residents are purchasing vacation homes in these lakefront towns. The vacation homeowners use these as their summer/fall retreat and the rest of the year subsidize their income by using the property as a rental.

Every type of recreational boating is welcome, whether it be speed, sail or pleasure boats. And yes Patio boats are also welcome, the "party barge" is alive and well on Lake Hopatcong.

The Kuranda Skyrail is a unique experience gliding above and within pristine rainforest. As you watch the Coral Sea (a part of the same Pacific that ‘Cortez’ first saw from Panama) from the vantage point ensconced in your cozy gondola, you feel like you are an adventurer out to discover new lands. As you skim over the pristine canopy of a tropical rainforest you come face to face with raw sublime nature that is a source of everyday awe in these parts.

Kuranda Skyrail, a cablecar system high above the Barron George National Park, is a unique experience that every visitor to Queensland must savor for themselves.

As ecotourism gained greater fad during the 1990s, various parts of the world tried to marry ecological hotspots with tourism. This has many advantages:
    The authorities earn revenue.
    The tourism generates direct and indirect employment.
    It leads to infrastructural development.
    People learn about and appreciate nature and ecology.

The Kuranda Skyrail was conceived with the same objectives way back in 1987, and after numerous feasibility and scientific studies, the go ahead was given in May 1994, with the construction starting the very next month. There were protests, of course. Opponents argued that construction would lead to destruction of pristine forest land and cause damage to flora and fauna, many of which were endangered.

As a result, tremendous precaution attended the construction. Tower parts were carried by helicopters and downloaded with long lines to avoid wind turbulence around the forest canopy. All plants disturbed were re-installed carefully after completion of construction.

$35 million and 15 months later the Skyrail opened to great public acclaim. Even today it remains one of the most environmentally sensitive cableways in the world, with many accreditations like Green Globe 21, EMS ISO certifications, QMS ISO certifications and Advanced Ecotourism Accreditation.

Today, the Kuranda Skyrail is one of the major tourist attractions in the whole of Australia. Stretching over 7.5 kilometers of lush rainforests, 114 gondolas carry 700 people per hour and move continuously throughout the year – they come to a halt only on Christmas Day. The journey is a study in fascination – at times you hover over the canopy, and as the gondolas near the stations, you glide into the forest and touch the rainforest ground. A one-way trip takes about 1.5 hours, while a return trip would take at least 2.5 hours. A total of four landing stations – Caravonica Terminal, Red Peak Station, Barron Falls Station and Kuranda – one can start or conclude a trip either at Caravonica or Kuranda. Caravonica, situated just 15 minutes from Cairns is only 5 meters above sea level, whereas the Red Peak, at 545 meters remains the highest. The mid-stations of Red Peak and Barron Falls provide alighting opportunities that must be enjoyed. At the Red Peak is a 175 meter wooden broadwalk that shall take you into the heart of rainforest floor as you get to see the flora from up close. Complimentary guided broadwalk tours by informed attendants make the journey entertaining as well as informative. It is also the perfect place to spot many unique species of birds and butterflies. The blue Ulysses butterflies are the most famous among them. The approach to the Barron Falls station is one of the most spectacular sights as the cableway glides past the majestic Barron gorge with its steep granite walls lined with deep vegetation. The Kuranda terminal is situated in Kuranda, the ‘village in the Rainforest’, a tourist spot in itself. With a butterfly sanctuary, colorful aviary and koala park, shops, cafes, restaurants and various other historical buildings, Kuranda deserves a few hours by itself. Of course many people hurry through the tour and return back to enjoy as much of the tropics as possible in a single day. But if you want to savor the real taste of the rainforest and the Skyrail, you should definitely devote your leisurely hours at each of the stations.

Skyrail is considered a must by all tourists to north Queensland. It is easily accessible from Cairns and Port Douglas (50 kms). One may take a return trip on the Skyrail. Another popular option is to go to Kuranda on the Skyrail and return by Kuranda Scenic Railway, or vice versa. The railway winds majestically along the gorge past a spectatcular waterfall cascade, and is a marvelous historically significant contrast to the modern convenience of the skyrail gondolas.

A tropical country, it has warm temperature during summer months, and is cool during the winter. Rain need not dampen your adventure – the rainforest is used to being drenched in heavy rainfall, and many locals say the real beauty of the rainforest emerges only during the rains. So as long as you don’t arrive on Christmas day, you are sure to carry home a fascinating memory. And you might remember the lines from Keats on your way home.

Kangaroo Island is about seven times the size of Singapore and around 155 kilometres in length, with the town of Kingscote being the island's capital and main settlement. Wildlife is abundant on the island, where koalas laze in the gum trees and seals laze on the beach. In addition, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, platypi and goannas all thrive on the island.

A wide range of tours are available on Kangaroo Island, enabling you to relax while someone else does the driving. In addition, guides can provide a great deal of information about Kangaroo Island on the way. Both coach tours and four-wheel drive tours are available, with most tours collecting passengers from their accommodation, the airport or the ferry terminal. Bike riding and hiking are also possible for those with the energy, but beware that Kangaroo Island is large and the necessary level of  fitness is required for these options.

Large luxury vehicle and passenger ferries operate between Cape Jervis on the South Australian coast and Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island (travelling time 45 minutes). There are four departures daily, with extra services at peak times. Bus connections are available to/from Adelaide to Cape Jervis, and to/from Penneshaw to American River and Kingscote on the island. Regional Express operates a 30-minute air service from Adelaide to Kingscote Airport, located 13km from Kingscote.

Because of its relative isolation, Kangaroo Island has experienced much less impact from  European settlement than than the South Australian mainland. Half the bushland on Kangaroo Island remains untouched since the time of British navigator Matthew Flinders named the island in 1802, and more than a third of the Island has National Park or Conservation Park status. This pristine bushland supports a rich wildlife population of wildlife and makes Kangaroo Island on of the best places in Australia to see wildlife in its natural environment.

Kangaroo Island was separated from mainland Australia about 10,000 years ago. In that time, some species have evolved differently from their mainland counterparts. This is evident for example in the Kangaroo Island Kangaroo (a subspecies of the Western Grey Kangaroo common in south-eastern Australia) which is today smaller, darker and has longer fur than its mainland counterpart. The now endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo is also a unique Kangaroo Island sub-species, as is the small marsupial carnivore the Sooty Dunnart.

Similarly, King Island's plants have evolved in isolation to the point where at least 45 species are endemic (found only on Kangaroo Island) including several eucalypts. The total absence of feral creatures such as foxes and rabbits helps ensures the integrity Kangaroo Island's bushland ecosystems.

In recognition of Kangaroo Island's unique plant and wildlife species (some of which are either threatened or unique to the island), National and Conservation parks were declared across the island very early in the history of its European settlement. Kangaroo Island's National Parks provide access to spectacular coastline scenery, unique geological formations, fascinating history and abundant wildlife. There are four major parks: Flinders Chase National Park (walking trails and spectacular rock formations), Kelly Hill Conservation Park (limestone caves and hiking), Seal Bay Conservation Park (Australia's largest accessible colony of sea lions) and Cape Willoughby Conservation Park (first lighthouse in South Australia).

Javea: A Coastal Paradise

Xàbia, also known as Jávea, is a coastal town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Marina Alta, a comarca in Alicante, Spain. The town itself is divided into three parts; the Old Quarter, the port and the village that is almost 3 km inland. Declared one of the healthiest climates in the world by the World Health Organization, Jávea is protected by the cool harsh winds of the winter from the north by the mountain of Montgó. The temperatures stay pleasant enough even during the summer, averaging 32°c in the warmest month of August which is also one of the most active months in Jávea in terms of tourist activity.

Fast becoming a popular tourist resort, the town of Jávea has developed into a hot property market for retirement villas and land in general. The population of around 28,500 swells to over 100,000 when the tourists pour in. For the most part through, the inland groves of Jávea are undisturbed by the tourist activities, they still produce tons of citrus oranges every year and the sight remains awesome when the branches are laden in season.

From a tourist point of view, the town is accessible through roads while the nearest train station at Gata de Gorgos is 10km inland. Connected to Alicante and Valencia through bus service as well, Jávea is at an hours drive from the two airports. In addition, the coach service caters daily to travelers headed to and from Madrid.

Once a town fortified to ward off pirates and marauders, the ‘old quarter’ of Jávea boasts the 14th Century Church of Sant Bartolomé that is dated a further 300 years back through some evidence. The church was declared a National Historic and Arts Monument for its historical value and is a popular tourist attraction now. While the ruins of the 15th Century Fontana Castle in the Arenal region have been replaced by apartment buildings, the cannons of the British destroyed fortification are still displayed in front of the Church of Sant Bartolomé. The Museo Historico y Etnografico Municipal J.B. Soler Blasco Javea, an etnographical museum, and the Agustinas Descalzas are also located in the old quarter, along with a modern market that, even with the span of time, retains the beauty of the olden days.

The port is an obvious tourist favorite with a gravel beach, marina and a wide variety of restaurants to keep holiday makers adequately entertained. As with most areas in Jávea, there is a historical significance to everything. The port, dating back to the 15th century, played its extraordinary role in raisins export till the trade collapsed by the end of the 19th century. An attraction in the port area is the church of Nuestra Señora del Loreto which shows off the town’s fishing culture to the hilt in its build. This area compliments the sandy beach of Arenal which is the party centre for the town. The various sand artists work away as while the tourists pour in, making it into a bustling place with bars, beach parties and long nights of fun and activity.

If all this isn’t enough to set Jávea out as a town to visit, the 2,150 hectares of Montgó National Park add another mix of history and modern lifestyle to the area. The archeological remains dating several thousand years back, and the various pagan and Christian and cultural fiestas held in June, July and September make sure the time spent in this beautiful resort town worth your while.
